VALUE OF WORK DONE, CHAIN VOLUME MEASURES

TOTAL

• The trend estimate for the value of total engineering construction work done rose 4.3% in the September 2012 quarter.
• The seasonally adjusted estimate for the value of total engineering construction work done rose 3.6% in the September quarter to $32,006.0m.

PRIVATE SECTOR

• The trend estimate for the value of work done for the private sector rose 5.9% in the September quarter.
• The seasonally adjusted estimate for the value of work done for the private sector rose 6.9% in the September quarter to $24,268.7m.

PUBLIC SECTOR

• The trend estimate for the value of work done for the public sector fell 0.3% in the September quarter.
• The seasonally adjusted estimate for the value of work done for the public sector fell 5.8% in the September quarter to $7,737.3m.

VALUE OF WORK COMMENCED, CURRENT PRICES

• The value of work commenced in the September quarter was $23,620.5m, an increase of 16.7% from the June quarter.

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 28 November 2012.


CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

A new base year, 2010-11, has been included into the chain volume estimates which has resulted in revisions to growth rates in subsequent periods. In addition, the chain volume estimates have been re-referenced to 2010-11, thereby preserving additivity in the quarters after the reference year. Re-referencing affects the levels of, but not the movements in, chain volume estimates.

A readily printable (PDF) publication is no longer released for this and future issues. Headline data items are presented in HTML format. Data series in the Time Series Spreadsheets are maintained and produced to the same timetable currently in place for this release.

This issue contains the first release of Relative Standard Errors (RSEs) as Data Cubes. These replace tables 28 and 29 from the former readily printable (PDF) publication. See the Data Cubes section under the downloads tab for more details.

Time Series Spreadsheet Table 37, which disaggregates work done by the public sector by the level of government reporting, now combines Commonwealth Government and State and Territory Government reported work. Local Government reported work continues to be separately identified.


DATA NOTE

Several time series spreadsheets for the September 2012 and June 2012 quarters contain 'np' (not available for publication) annotations. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.

Trend estimates should be used with caution due to the volatility caused by large engineering projects. For more details on trend estimates, please see paragraphs 22 to 24 of the explanatory notes.
